Job Information

This volunteer serves a term of at least one month but no more than six months at a time. Chaplain-in-Residence reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the following duties.

  • Supports residents and staff by regularly attending scheduled meetings and programs, and by reaching out in times of need;
  • Offers regular pastoral presence and availability to residents and staff, both of a social and spiritual/religious nature; must exhibit the energy, commitment, visibility, and time to offer this presence and support;
  • Creatively engages and promotes the goals of Oaks Indian Mission to staff, residents and surrounding community;
  • Maintains a visible presence on campus through regular prayer walks and other ministerial activities;
  • Recognizes and exhibits respect for the Moravian and Lutheran heritage of the Oaks Indian Mission.
  • Exhibits excellent communication skills, professionalism and congeniality with all members of the staff and community;
  • Must reside on campus (private housing and some meals provided by the Mission);
  • Must be available for ministry as needed during non-business hours.


  • Master’s degree in Divinity, Theology, or Pastoral Studies, or comparable experience and/or training (graduate students currently enrolled in these degree programs also will be considered);
  • Previous ministry experience required;
  • Must be a member in good standing in one’s own faith tradition;
  • Excellent pastoral counseling skills, training, and formation;
  • Commitment to serving people of all faith traditions and/or no faith tradition;
  • Aptitude for dealing with confidential and sensitive issues;
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively;
  • Commitment to growing in one’s own religious and spiritual life and comfort in sharing one’s own spirituality.
